Early Puberty In Girls: Its Causes, Signs And How To Prevent It?

It is very important for all parents to have knowledge of puberty, especially when their children are in pubescent age. You may have noticed since birth so many changes occur in our body daily. Puberty is the stage in which our body evolves into sexual maturity. In this phase several physical as well as emotional changes develop in kids, it is a transition phase where they grow into young adulthood.
Normally puberty begins between the ages of 8 to 12 years in girls. In boys it is from 9 to 13 years.

Here we are discussing early puberty in girls. There are small numbers of girls who mature earlier than normal age. They develop breast and pubic hair before the age of 7. Early puberty in medical parlance is called precocious puberty. Let us know the reasons for early puberty in girls.

Causes Of Early Puberty In Girls

The cause of early puberty in more than half of girls is not known. It will be easy to understand early puberty in girls, once we understand how normal puberty begins.
Puberty begins when the body starts to release chemicals known as hormones.

There are different hormones which affect the body differently. Growth hormones stimulate the skeletal growth. Other hormones direct the breast growth, growth of pubic hair, release of egg from the ovaries and leading to menstrual bleeding.
The production of these hormones is controlled by hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. In precocious puberty, the pituitary gland in brain starts producing these hormones much earlier. There is no identifiable cause known for why early puberty sets in. However researchers believe following are the triggering factors:
  • A tumor in brain which secretes estrogen.
  • Birth defects in brain.
  • Radiation exposure.
  • An injury to brain.
  • Hypothyroidism in children.
  • Prenatal exposure to chemicals.
  • Obesity in girls.
  • Girls exposed to estrogen creams and ointments.
  • Cyst and tumor in ovary.

Signs Of Early Puberty In Girls

The onset of puberty signs and symptoms begin to develop before the age of 7 years. This may include the following:
  • Early breast growth in girls. A small mound starts developing below the nipple region. In few cases one breast may grow larger than the other. The breast feels tender when touched.
  • Pubic hair and hair in underarm starts developing before the age of seven.
  • Rapid skeletal growth.
  • Early onset of menstrual cycle. Few months before the onset of menses, there may be yellowish or white mucous discharge from the vagina.
  • Some girls may have acne on their face.
  • Peculiar body odor as the sweat gland becomes active in underarm and pubic region.
  • The hips begin to grow wider and the waist begins to slim.
  • Emotionally they become depressed. Their scholastic performance may suffer. They lose interest in daily activities.

How To Prevent Early Puberty In Girls?

Since in most cases the cause for early puberty in girls remain unclear, it is difficult to prevent it in first place. However parents can take few steps if they suspect their daughter may have a risk of developing precocious puberty.
  • Avoid your daughter to become overweight and obese. She should regularly engage herself in outdoor playing activities. Studies have shown excess of fat in girls body may accelerate secretion of estrogen, insulin. They are believed to be responsible for encouraging early puberty.
  • Avoid giving your daughter animal protein such as meat since in most cases the animal is treated with synthetic estrogen for commercial benefits.
  • Nowadays even dairy products contain hormones, especially the estrogen. Insist on all organic dairy products.
  • Girls below the age of 7 should always eat organically grown fruits and vegetables. Broccoli is one of the best vegetable to prevent early puberty in girls.

What Is Ischemic Colitis? Its Complications And What To Eat

Ischemic colitis is a gastrointestinal problem. It is a condition in which the arteries (blood vessels) that supply blood to the large intestine become narrow or are completely blocked. Due to reduced supply of blood, the cells of the intestine are not oxygenated adequately. This results in intestinal pain, inflammation and permanent colon damage.
The large intestine is very long and ischemia can occur in any part of the colon. The pain in the belly can be abrupt or gradual. It is accompanied with blood and mucus in stools. Patient may feel an urgency to pass stool.

The pain is more on the left lower side of the abdomen.
Ischemic colitis is more prevalent in elderly individuals. The exact cause of the disorder is not clear but certain risk factors are known and they are; atherosclerosis of colonic artery, low blood pressure, intestinal obstruction, surgical repair of major blood vessels, colon cancer and use of certain drugs such as cocaine etc. Patient suffering from irritable bowel syndrome is at a greater risk of suffering from ischemic colitis.
The symptoms of ischemic colitis mimic other gastrointestinal problems and thus it becomes difficult to pinpoint the diagnosis.

It can be detected only with examination and history. Medical treatment or surgery may be necessary to avoid complications. At times, the condition heals on its own.

Complications Of Ischemic Colitis

In majority of cases, ischemic colitis gets cured on its own in a few days. However, in severe cases, it can complicate further and lead to serious health problems.
  • Death of the affected region (gangrene): Due to decreased blood supply or complete blockage of the artery, the affected part of colon becomes necrosed (dies). This may lead to gangrene of the large intestine.
  • Perforation: Ischemia may lead to inflammation of the bowels. Due to inflammation, the lining of the intestine becomes thin and risk of perforation increases.
  • Obstruction of large intestine: It is one of the complications which require immediate attention as the condition can deteriorate further. It may become a life threatening issue.
All the complications need urgent surgical intervention.

What Is The Diet After Ischemic Colitis?

Diet plays an important role in ischemic colitis. Proper diet during this period is an essential part of the treatment. The diet should comprise of easily digestible foods. Eating a bland diet is a better option. The aim of selecting diets during this period is to heave off the extra load of food and help easy digestion as well as to encourage the healing process.
  • Eating bananas are beneficial. Bananas are rich in potassium and phosphorus. They are easy to digest. Potassium content ensures smooth supply of oxygen to the circulatory system. Therefore it helps the ischemic artery to dilate.
  • Buttermilk is an easily digestible liquid. Also, buttermilk contains potassium and vitamins which are essential during colitis.
  • Applesauce not only has all the nutritive value but it also has fibers which play an important role in any digestive troubles. Applesauce also has anti inflammatory properties and thus it is beneficial for ischemic colitis.
  • Coconut water is a time tested remedy for all digestive troubles including ischemic colitis.
  • Other foods that can be included in the diet are rice, papaya, apple, porridge, toast, watermelon, yogurt etc.
  • Certain foods that produce gas should be avoided during ischemic colitis such as fried foods, spicy foods, cabbage, broccoli, corn, mustard seeds, raw vegetables, turnip, popcorn etc.

What Is Gustatory Rhinitis? What Foods Cause It And How To Cure?

Rhinitis is a common medical problem and every person in his lifetime may have experienced running or congested nose. In rhinitis, the lining inside the nose (mucus membrane) becomes inflamed and irritated. It leads to excess production of thin watery fluid (mucus) and we call it running nose.
Running nose, nasal congestion and postnasal drip can be due to three major reasons; bacterial or viral infection, allergy and non–allergy conditions. Gustatory rhinitis is non- allergic form of rhinitis. Various other non-allergic forms of rhinitis include; vasomotor, drug induced, autonomic etc.

What Foods Cause Gustatory Rhinitis?

Gustatory rhinitis occurs after eating certain foods especially spicy and hot food. There is no involvement of any bacteria or virus or an allergen in gustatory rhinitis. This form of rhinitis can affect any person; adults as well as children. However people who have allergic rhinitis and smokers are at great risk of suffering from gustatory rhinitis.
Gustatory rhinitis occurs because certain food irritates the nerves present in the nasal passage as well as the Vagus nerve. As a result, the mucus membrane of the nose becomes inflamed. It produces more secretion inside the nose to wash off the irritants.
Although hot and spicy foods are the prominent cause for gustatory rhinitis, they are not the only ones.

There are many other foods that are responsible for the condition. Here are some of the foods responsible;
  • Hot chili pepper, as it contains capsaicin
  • Hot and spicy food
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee, tea
  • Tomatoes
  • Alcohol
  • Vinegar
  • Oranges, lemon and other citrus fruits

Gustatory Rhinitis Symptoms

  • Running nose is the main symptom of gustatory rhinitis. The person experiences running nose soon after eating or drinking certain types of food, especially hot and spicy.
  • Few people may also complain of postnasal drip, nasal congestion (stuffy nose), coughing and sneezing.
  • The discharge is profuse, watery and thin. It occurs as a result of dilatation of tiny blood vessels of the nasal lining.
  • The symptoms appear during or within few minutes after eating the offending food. This is the characteristic feature of gustatory rhinitis.

How To Cure Gustatory Rhinitis?

Gustatory rhinitis is a self limiting condition. You may not need any treatment and the symptoms heal on its own. Often gustatory rhinitis becomes a nuisance. The most practical cure of gustatory rhinitis is to identify and avoid the foods that are responsible for producing the problem.
However, if you cannot resist eating those tongue tingling spicy dishes, some experts suggest taking anti histamines one hour before eating these foods. But one school of thought believes that anti histamines are of no use as gustatory rhinitis does not occur due to histamine release.
Nasal corticosteroid sprays, anticholinergic agents, mucolytic medicines are beneficial if symptoms of gustatory rhinitis worsen.

How To Cure Rebound Headaches? What Are Its Causes And Symptoms?

We frequently take analgesic medicine to relieve headache. Paradoxically these very medications that we take to relieve headache may be responsible for headache. Such type of headaches are called rebound headache.
Rebound headache is likely to occur when the patient ignores to take medicine for headache as directed. People gulp over-the-counter pain relievers too frequently. In a week or in a day, they may be taking it many times. To an extent, the medicines are beneficial in relieving headaches, but the same medicines can worsen headache if it is overused or abused.
The frequency of rebound headaches may depend on the type of medicine consumed and the dose of the overused drug.
Simple analgesics particularly those combined with an opiate (codeine) or barbiturates or paracetamol and aspirin with caffeine may cause rebound headaches. Often ergotamine and caffeine are responsible for such headaches. The pain may persist throughout the day. It is dull and diffuse. Complete withdrawal of analgesic is the only effective treatment.

Causes Of Rebound Headaches

The reason behind rebound headaches is not exactly known. Scientists postulate it that analgesics and pain relievers are responsible for rebound headaches.
It alters the pain perception pathway in the brain.
  • Commonly used analgesics when consumed frequently and in large amounts can trigger rebound headaches. These include simple pain medicines which are so common such as acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.
  • Pain relievers which are available in combination are generally responsible for rebound headaches. This includes caffeine, paracetamol and aspirin.
  • Person having history of chronic headaches, migraine, and who take analgesics frequently are at greater risk of suffering from rebound headaches.
  • The risk also increases with ergot preparation taken more than 10 days in a month. Same is the case with simple analgesics taken for more than two weeks.
Rebound headache only happens in people who take medicines for headache. Surprisingly, it does not occur in people who take painkillers or analgesic to treat other conditions such as arthritis.

Rebound Headaches Symptoms

Rebound headache usually appears as the patient gets up from his sleep. It is more in early morning. Headache persists throughout the day. It is like “all day, every day headache”. As soon as the patient takes pain relieving medicine, he feels better. However, as soon as the effect of medicine tapers, he begins to experience headache which may be more intense. Headache may become worse with any physical or mental work.
The other concomitant symptoms together with headache include neck pain, anxiety, nervousness, sleeplessness, difficulty in concentration, irritation etc.

How To Cure Rebound Headaches?

Initially it is difficult to treat rebound headaches. The patient needs to break the cycle of taking pain medicine. Depending on the type of medicine that the patient takes to alleviate headaches, the health care provider may suggest to completely stop the medicine or to reduce it gradually.
It is not easy for the patient to stop the medicine abruptly. His headache may become worse initially. He may have withdrawal symptoms such as nervousness, vomiting, constipation etc. They may last for a week or two. It is more common with people taking sedatives, hypnotics, or patient taking combination pills for headaches.
At times, when patient is unable to control himself from taking headache medicine, he may require hospitalization. Under proper medical supervision, treatment can be planned to detoxify his system. During detoxification process, the patient may suffer from severe headache. He may require continuous monitoring by an expert.
Patient may also need cognitive behavioral therapy.
Alternative treatments are beneficial for many patients. Acupuncture, massage therapy and herbs such as feverfew and butterbur are found to be effective.

Causes Of Postpartum Hair Loss: How To Prevent Excessive Hair Loss?

Many moms are concerned about postpartum hair loss. Hair loss few months after pregnancy is not uncommon; at least 40 to 50% of women get affected by it. Like many changes which have returned to normal after pregnancy, hair loss too will not last long. It will revert back to normal.
But one thing is certain; you are not going to become bald even after so much of postpartum hair loss, you should not panic. Postpartum hair loss is usually experienced 3 months after delivery. It has something to do with rise and fall of female hormone estrogen that we will discuss in the next paragraph.

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

In normal condition, the hair grows in three stages. The first stage is called anagen or growing stage. The second stage is called catagen or the transition stage and the last stage is called telogen or resting stage. At any given time, 90 percent of hair are in growing stage. The rest are in other two stages.
During pregnancy, there is excess secretion of estrogen. The level of estrogen therefore remains high. High level of Estrogen hormones during pregnancy locks the hair roots and accelerates hair growth. It also reduces normal hair fall.

This is the reason many women feel their hair becoming thick, particularly women who have short hairs.
After the birth of child, level of estrogen will gradually fall and come to its normal. As a result, large portion of hair will switch into the transition stage and subsequently in resting stage. The hair in resting stage generally remain on the scalp for 3 months after which the hair starts falling. It is for this reason postpartum hair loss is experienced 3 months after the delivery. This phase of hair loss may remain for 6 months to 1 year. Ultimately after the third phase is over, hair loss returns back to its normal pre pregnancy level.
This temporary hair loss has no relation in context with lack of nutrition or vitamins. So the next time when you observe clumps of hair while brushing, few months after delivery, do not get panic. There are several ways to treat and reduce hair fall.

Prevention Of Excessive Postpartum Hair Loss

Numbers of things can help to prevent excessive postpartum hair loss.
  • First and foremost consult your doctor to balance the hormones.
  • Avoid hair weave, tightening your hair too much, pigtails, and tight hair rollers.
  • Use shampoos which contain natural compounds. Avoid using too harsh shampoos containing chemicals.
  • Eat diet rich in vegetables and fruits. It contains flavanoids and other antioxidant compounds which are effective in strengthening hair roots. They also encourage hair growth.
  • Use wide tooth combs. This will prevent hair damage when you comb entangled hairs.
  • Avoid hair dyes and other hair products that may have a damaging effect on hairs.
  • Avoid the use of hair dryers.
  • You can take vitamin and mineral supplements after consulting your doctor. Multivitamin which contains vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, Zinc are all good for maintaining healthy hairs.
  • Exercise regularly as it will increase the blood circulation in the scalp. Good circulation of blood in scalp will provide nutrients and oxygen which is necessary for good hair growth.
  • A gentle massage is also valuable for increasing blood circulation in scalp.

What Causes Belly Button Hair? How To Get Rid Of It At Home?

Belly button is a colloquial term used for what we all know as umbilicus or navel. Actually it is a scar on abdomen left behind when the umbilical cord is cut after child birth. Besides being a prominent mark on abdomen, which is used by medical professionals to separate the abdomen in different quadrants, belly button has significant cosmetic importance, especially among women. It is considered to be an erogenous zone having high sensitivity. A simple touch around umbilicus can produce erotic sensation.
Considering its cosmetic importance, hair in and around the umbilicus may be embarrassing for many.

Most women will feel ashamed and annoyed to wear short clothes that may display belly button hair. Usually there is sparse hair in and around the umbilicus among women. However, there can be genetic predisposition for abundant hair growth in and around umbilicus among women as well as men.
In a condition called hirsutism, there is excessive hair growth on body surface, including around the navel. Use of certain medications and hormonal changes can also trigger growth of belly button hair. Before getting rid of belly button hair, it is important to know the underlying cause for its occurrence.

It will also help to prevent the re-growth of unwanted hair.

How To Get Rid Of Hair Around Belly Button?

Several ways can be adopted to remove belly button hair. This includes shaving, waxing, depilatory cream and laser removal. However there are flaws with some of them. For example shaving may make the skin appear dark. Depilatory cream and waxing may be more effective. Steps to remove belly button hair:
Hair removal with depilatory cream:
  • Take warm compresses or shower before beginning the process. The skin will become soft after shower. Also the hair follicles will open.
  • Now clean the area with soft cloth and make it dry.
  • Now it’s time to apply the depilatory. But before that, apply it to a small area, to see if there is any skin reaction.
  • Apply it according to the directions mentioned on the leaflet or the packet.
  • Apply it on and around the belly button. Apply it in thick layer. Avoid too much rubbing of the cream. Let the cream remain for several minutes or follow the instructions given on the packet.
  • Remove the cream with a stick which comes with the product. You can also use a washcloth instead. Along with it the hair will be removed.
  • Now wash the belly button area with warm water. Dry the area with a dry cloth.
  • If your skin is sensitive, you can apply steroidal cream.
Another more effective method is laser hair removal. Here a beam of laser goes deep down in the hair follicle and destroys the hair follicle in the umbilical area. Usually laser therapy is a permanent solution of hair removal.

Pat Robertson Tells Wife Of Cheating Husband To Be Grateful For Marriage, Make Home Enticing

Pat Robertson has many opinions on subjects including homosexuality, politics and the coming of the Mark of the Beast, but it was the famous televangelist's opinion on marriage that took center stage during Wednesday's episode of his daily television program, "The 700 Club."

Responding to a question from a viewer, Robertson said that married men "have a tendency to wander" and it is the spurned wife's job to focus on the positive and make sure the home is so enticing, he doesn't want to stray.

"I've been trying to forgive my husband for cheating on me," the viewer writes. "We have gone to counseling, but I just can't seem to forgive, nor can I trust. How do you let go of the anger? How do you trust again?"

While Robertson's co-host hedged on the question, calling forgiveness "difficult" and spousal infidelity "one of the ultimate betrayals," Robertson got right to the point.

"Here's the secret," the famous evangelical said. "Stop talking the cheating. He cheated on you, well, he's a man."

The wife needs to focus on the reasons she married her spouse, he continued.

"Does he provide a home for you to live in," Robertson said. 'Does he provide food for you to eat? Does he provide clothes for you to wear? Is he nice to the children... Is he handsome?"
